Brownstown hosts BNL for lift contest GRINDING FOR GAINS SPORTS PAGE B1 Konkle receives 34-year prison term BY ERIKA MALONE THE TRIBUNE BROWNSTOWN A Kos- ciusko County man was sentenced to 34 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter for the death of Michael J. Steele in July 2021 on the midway the Jackson County Fair. Zachariah David Konkle of Warsaw received that sentence Wednesday morning from Jackson Circuit Court Judge Richard W.
Poynter. Konkle was found guilty of the Level 2 felony by a jury on Feb. 16. A Level 2 felony carries a sentence of 10 to 30 years, but his sentence carried an enhancement due to him being a habitual offender. Konkle has two battery convictions with one resulting in bodily injury to a victim younger than 14 and a convic- tion for sexual misconduct with a minor.
The charge against Konkle stems from a fight between him and Steele after a family at- tending the fair asked Konkle if he could find someone in charge because a carnival worker around the Long Shot game on the midway had made fun of their special needs child and wanted to file a complaint, ac- cording to court records. Steele died as a result of the fight. Konkle did not make a state- ment during hearing. Poynter also denied a defense motion for a modifica- tion in sentencing after serving a certain amount of time. Four of family members gave statements on his behalf.

Staci Eglen of Cortland was selected to replace Auditor Roger Hurt, who recently resigned, during a caucus of Republican precinct committeemen and committeewomen on Feb. 21. Hurt said Tuesday morning after a county commissioners meeting at the courthouse that he plans to return to his roots in construction after receiving an offer.

The auditor, which is a constitutional office, is the fiscal officer for county government in Indiana and serves as the secretary of the board of county commis- sioners and the clerk to the county council. As a constitutional office, auditors can only hold two consecutive four-year terms. The respon- sibilities also include keeping and issuing checks for the county and distributing property tax revenues to the AIMING HIGH Seymour High School archery team set for state BY ZACH SPICER THE TRIBUNE Each archery year at Seymour High School has been different for head coach Jill Purkhiser. This is the eighth year for the pro- gram, and each team has had a different makeup. One thing has remained constant, though: The Owls have qualified for the state, national and world tournaments.
The first of those accomplishments state has been checked off for the 2022-23 season. The Owls hosted the Seymour Invitational, a state qualifier tournament, on Jan. 28 and scored 3,249, placing second. That score ad- vanced them to the Indiana National Archery in the Schools Program State Bullseye Tour- nament on Saturday at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis. lot of people realize the suc- cess that this archery team has had since we started, and never missed a state tournament.
